“Going Viral” 2024

20.11.2024

Public Outreach Course connecting with local schools

For the third time, the „Going Viral“ public outreach program was successfully hosted at the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences (Forschungszentrum Jülich). This initiative is part of the DFG-funded Priority Programme SPP 2330 “New Concepts in Prokaryotic Virus-Host Interactions,” and was organized in collaboration between the JuLab and the group of Prof. Dr. Julia Frunzke. Aimed at engaging school students in cutting-edge microbiology and phage research, the course focused on isolating novel bacteriophages targeting the antibiotic-producing Streptomyces or the industrially relevant platform strain Corynebacterium glutamicum. These newly identified viruses will make a valuable contribution to ongoing research in the field and foster the identification of new components of the bacterial immune system, including the discovery of new antiviral molecules produced by bacteria.

The program opened with an interactive lecture on phage biology and real-world applications, delivered by Dr. Tom Luthe and Biel Badia Roigé. Following the introduction, high school students from the 4. Aachener Gesamtschule embarked on a hands-on „phage hunt,“ collecting soil samples that were later processed in the lab to isolate bacteriophages for selected host bacteria. Throughout the course, participants gained practical experience in fundamental microbiological techniques and an authentic glimpse into the daily work of a scientist.

The course culminated with a presentation of the high school students at the Helmholtz School Congress, attended by over 200 peers from the Jülich, Aachen, and Cologne regions. This platform not only showcased their achievements but also highlighted the role of young minds in advancing science and tackling global challenges like the antimicrobial resistance crisis were phages represent an important and sustainable alternative to antibiotic treatments.
