Phage Therapy

Phage therapy, short for bacteriophage therapy, is a medical treatment that uses bacteriophages (phages) to combat bacterial infections. Bacteriophages are viruses that specifically infect and destroy bacteria. The advantage of phage therapy lies in its specificity; phages target only the harmful bacteria, leaving the beneficial bacteria unaffected. This specificity is especially beneficial when dealing with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. It also helps in avoiding disruption of the normal microbial balance in the body. Phage therapy has gained renewed interest in recent years as a potential alternative or adjunct to antibiotics, especially in cases where antibiotic treatments are ineffective due to bacterial resistance.
